Book Review for the story TELL ME YOUR DREAMS by SIDNEY SHELDON

Title of the Book: “Tell me your Dreams”

Author: Sidney Sheldon

Toni Prescott and Alette Peters are also in the book. They reluctantly team up with Ashley after people begin to turn up dead. And Toni as well as Allette is the two alters being referred. If Ashley is just a simple girl/lady, Toni is the aggressive one while Allette has the submissive personality. At start of the story, Ashley Patterson feels that some one was following her, since she loved to read, she had read about stalkers and somehow, it influenced her a lot. Every night she had terrible nightmares. And through the place, the series of horrible murders throw a sign of fear across the country and every the victims are male apparently murdered in the same way, leaving them injured and castrated while having sex. The police makes a catch leading to one of the most peculiar murder trial ever witnessed, It found out that Ashley’s fingerprints are allover the murder scenes and traces of her virginal fluid, the case looks to be a clear cut one but Ashley reject of having committed the crime and barely even knows the victims. Ashley’s fathers plead her case an attorney friend to stand for Ashley. The second half of the novel deals with the trial, complete with endless power struggle between opposing psychiatrists as to whether or not MPD is real. Finally when Ashley’s advocate introduces Toni, the violent alter of Ashley, the court is convinced that Ashley is innocent. Ashley is committed to an insane asylum and in the course of therapy is introduced to her two “alters” and relives the horrific events that traumatized her mind. She was sexually abused by her father during childhood and this made her to develop a strong hatred towards men.

The book gives a light on MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). MPD is still, a controversial topic. Staying in the city, I have seen people acting weird at times. And I most of the time pass by the comment, “Ashley has lost his senses”. After reading this book, it made me feel the pain that she went through. It gave me feeling of a Cocoon (shell) that one develops to protect himself.

I began to think differently by asking myself if there is really a treatment for this disorder. I also think that spending a VERY long time in counseling and miss out on a lot of the life Ashley could be living could be very tiring Ashley have to remember enough to know what happened, why she have parts, and what needs to be done to feel safe again. The way I understand the case, Multiples have left through frequent abuse events, sometimes with more than one abuser. And this part is what I consider to be the most frightening. In the story, each abuser has to be addressed in counseling, but many of the types of abuse events were repeated. In my perception, some memories of Ashley stand out as major turning points, major traumas, or other life-changing events which tend to require a lot of processing in therapy. Regarding the memories of Ashley in the story, relating it to reality, how can it be known if a certain memory is true? That is a question I ask to myself frequently. I suppose no one can be totally sure of the accuracy any person’s memories. I also think if neurological damage, such as brain injury, might be the cause of Multiple Personality Disorder. Or is it possible that it is caused by neurological changes or damage such as lesions or tumors. I am also thinking of the chance of specific alters to have characteristics of a thought disorder or personality disorder. If some people was diagnosed with MPD/DID personality disorder, I would like to search for the possibility if it is clinically appropriate even if only a few of the alters have borderline characteristics.

Insights and Realizations:

The first realization I have had for this book is the effects of Multiple Personality Disorder. MPD can obviously affect perception, thinking, feeling, behavior, body and memory. So, the person with a Multiple Personality Disorder has to cope with many challenges in life. And this would be very stressful for that certain person. I also had realizations about its impact of MPD. Is it something that varies from person to person or Is it something that change over time. In my perception, way of coping the person is not a good way of telling how severely affected a person is. I realize that putting up a front can be very exhausting. Almost everyone coping with these difficulties strives to keep them hidden from others.

On the second thought, I also have realizations about the advantages that can be getting from having MPD.  I realize that somehow, MPD can give way for a convenient excuse for some people, doing what one knows is wrong but not having to feel guilty or bear the consequences. Commonly, the assumed alters do what the patient would “never do.” Another advantage is that it could be a very dramatic way of making sense out of life or drawing attention to one’s own importance by having a condition that seems beyond the scope of most people. The person becomes both the star and the entire cast in a drama that challenges all who try to help, even the therapist. Moreover, I guess the diagnosis is also an advantage for the therapist.  MPDs are fascinating and long term. If a therapist has enough MPD cases, he won’t have to drum up business. He can participate as the paid partner in this treatment for a “long run.”
